City: Pettorano On Gizio Directions: A24 exit Pratola Peligna / Sulmona, continue for 20 km towards Roccacasale / Pettorano on Gizio News: The imposing structure built in the eleventh century, overlooking the river Gizio dominating from the hill of Guardiola, the entire Valle Peligna. During the Norman castle was the stronghold of Oddo, the son of Odo of Pettorano. It was with the Angevin, the late thirteenth century, which assumed an important role in the feudal state of Cantelmo. The fortress has an irregular polygonal plan, altered the north-east dall'intromissione onto its premises of private dwellings. The castle has six gates, the defensive structure is acclaimed as the shoe base wall that runs along the perimeter, and the fact that angles northwest and southwest of the structure are reinforced by cylindrical towers, and the south- east from a bastion tip. The entire perimeter of curtain walls and towers are characterized by firmness and severity: practically devoid of decorative elements and large openings are interrupted only by small slits and sharpshooter. Emerges from the center of the fortress tower strut, pentagonal, which although lacking the crown, far above the height of the rest of the building. The strut is unanimously considered the oldest of the rest of the castle, some scholars even medieval. Of particular importance is the entrance raised strut located on the north side, accessed via a high spiral staircase modern, featuring a lintel carved with the arms of Cantelmo who held possession of Pettorano until the middle of the eighteenth century when the estate passed to Touch Montemiletto. Some traces of the walls surrounding the village are still detectable, as well as some watchtowers still recognizable even if partially modified. The fortified complex has undergone from 1992 to 1998, consolidation work conservation of masonry structures and renovation of the interior, by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage Eagle. The castle, owned by the City of Pettorano on Gizio, following the restoration completed in the nineties, has been partly transformed into a modern exhibition and hosts exhibitions, photographic exhibitions and competitions.
