The town, inhabited since ancient times, was the main center of population Pretuziano. It was later conquered by the Roman consul Curio Manius teeth in 290 BC (Five years after the battle of Sentino), becoming City Hall.

Looted and destroyed by the Visigoths in 410 was refounded in 568, after it was conquered by the Lombards before joining Marquis of Boarding and then the Duchy of Spoleto. Contest between the Normans and the Dukes of Apulia, Teramo was almost destroyed in 1155 but lifts again and, under the domination bishop enjoyed a period of relative prosperity witnessed by the construction of the new cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Berardo. Since 1395 it suffered the domain of the Duchy of Atri, when the Earl of St. Flavian Antonio Acquaviva, Duke of Atri and appointed himself Lord of Teramo. However, a series of negative events, culminating in the earthquake of 1380, the infighting between the family and that of the Melatini De Valle and the robbery led to a profound decline in the city, from which there is no lifts or under the domination of the lords of 'Altavilla, nor in subsequent French and Spanish.
